The Facts About Genetically Engineered Food

Research about genetically engineered food is showing risk. The recent finding of genetically modified (GM) wheat in a farm in Oregon has raised eyebrows about the wheat that the US exports. The US Department of Agriculture disclosed that there were GM wheat plants in the area. The GM type that is developed by Monsanto, which is a company that deals with agriculture, has never been approved to be consumed by humans. Very little research about genetically engineered food and human consumption has been completed. Scientists are just beginning to understand the effect on health.

The concern for the safety of consumers has prompted many countries and active GM movements based locally, to ask questions about the wheat that is sold and exported. The European Union advised its members to ensure that they have tested some wheat shipments that they received from the US. The body itself imports more than 1 million tons of wheat annually.

Many countries in Asia have resorted to implementing policies that focus on importing wheat from the US. South Korea recently canceled the imports, despite the fact that it had in the previous year imported about half of the wheat it had from the US. They did this after Japan had implemented the same ban. Thailand strengthened its ports and is on the alert. China and the Philippines are keeping an eye on the situation and are closely watching the GM investigations done by the USDA regarding this slip-up.

The incident will have serious repercussions on the country. Wheat farmers will experience huge losses as a result of the decrease in demand. In recent months, food safety and environmental groups have been campaigning for GM ingredients to be disclosed at a greater extent. In other states, a move to get laws that will result in GM labeling are being pushed. There was a report that was released in 2008 by the Government Accountability Office which highlighted six outbreaks of GM crops in the food supply. There have been other cases that had only trace amounts.

Agricultural companies carry out about one thousand trials of GM crops on an annual basis. They do them at different farms countrywide. This increases the chances of the experimental genes leaking out.

An investigation is being done by the government meant to get to the bottom of how the wheat plants reached the Oregon field. Monsanto recently stated that it would work with them to find answers. It further added that the outbreak did not have any health risks.

Genetically modified variants have become very common in foods in the US. Monsanto has been doing GM wheat testing in 16 states. The last test that was done in Oregon was carried out in 2001. This information was released by the USDA.

About Genetically Engineered Food and Adrenal Fatigue

Approximately 93% of soy crops and 73% of corn crops are genetically modified to be herbicide tolerant. The goal of this is supposed to be the ability to grow crops with fewer herbicides. The reality, however, has been just the opposite. With crops that can withstand the herbicides more readily has come increased use of these chemicals. Greater use of these chemicals means more chemical residue in the food.

About genetically engineered food and wheatGlyphosate is one of the most commonly used herbicide chemicals and has been marketed as safe for use on food crops, because they act on certain metabolic pathways in plants that are not present in humans. While technically accurate, the bacteria found in the human gut does contain the same metabolic pathways found in the weeds targeted by these chemicals. These bacteria outnumber human cells by about ten to one and are responsible for absorbing nutrients and producing a number of vital neurotransmitters.

Evidence suggests that glyphosate may interfere with the metabolic pathways in gut bacteria in much the same way as it is intended to interfere with the same pathways in weeds. It may even have a greater impact on the beneficial bacteria than pathogens, allowing them to grow unchecked and create additional toxins, which lead to inflammation in the gut, damaging the gut lining and allowing toxins to leak into the bloodstream and cause chronic systemic inflammation.

No fewer than 19 different animal studies have about genetically engineered food have been linked to the disruption of multiple organs, most notably the kidneys and liver, according to a report published the March 1, 2011 issue of Environmental Sciences Europe. Another animal study found that GMO Feed reduced levels of corticosterone produced by the adrenal glands, at a dose low enough that no other toxic effects were seen. None of these studies have attempted to determine a safe level of GMO use, but all doses have produced some toxic effect.

Dr. Lam's Key Questions

Wheat and diary sensitivity often accompanies AFS for a wide variety of reasons. First, they can be hard to digest and assimilate for those who are already weak as the body slows down in a compensatory response to stress to conserve energy. Excessive metabolite accumulation due to slow assimilation cause inflammation and that sets up a vicious cycle to further slowing of the gut, exacerbating the sensitivities.

The Blood Type Diet is based on how the protein in the food called lectin affects blood agglutination. This diet is founded by Dr. Peter D'adamo. There are some principles in the blood type diet that are not accepted in conventional medicine and their recommendations. I.e. coconut and soy are some of these discrepancies. The blood type diet is fitting for most of the people. Due to tremendous variation in an individual constitution, there is no guaranteed success with it. If you would like to follow the blood type diet, I would recommend that you follow it vigorously for 3 months, even though you don't see much harm or benefit in certain food. After 3 months, if you see no improvements in your health, then you can deviate and use the blood type diet as a general guideline and not overeat the foods that should be avoided for your Blood Type, but take them with care and in small amounts.

Sprouted wheat actually removed the enzymes inhibitor which prevents the nutrients in the grain from absorption. For those who are sensitive, this type is less traumatic to the gut.
