Why You Should Try a Breakfast Popsicle

Improving your health with a breakfast popsicleThese days, almost everyone is aware of just how important it is to eat breakfast—it sets you up for the day, gives you the energy you need to get things done, and kick starts your metabolism. But choosing food for breakfast isn’t so simple. Between family responsibilities and trying to make sure everything is ready for your day, mornings can be hectic. So you may find yourself grabbing the quickest meal you can find, which doesn’t always give you the vitamins and minerals you need to start the day off right. A breakfast popsicle is a healthy alternative you can make the night before and grab out of the freezer as you rush past in the morning. This tasty option will give you lots of energy and has all the nutrients you need to give your system that all important morning boost.

Why is Breakfast so Important?

By the time you eat breakfast, you’ve been fasting for at least eight hours or perhaps even longer. The meal you eat is meant to give you the energy you need to get through your day, make your brain sharp and active, and fuel your body at the same time. This is why the type of food you eat for breakfast is so important.

Your breakfast should contain glucose, a sugar found in carbohydrates that is responsible for keeping your blood sugar levels stable, as well as maintaining proper functioning of every organ in your body, including your brain. Glucose is what gives you energy, therefore, you must ensure you’re receiving adequate amounts—particularly in the morning when your body has been without it for a long time. You also need to make sure you consume a variety of vitamins and minerals with your breakfast to give your body the fuel it so desperately needs to function. As a bonus, they also encourage good eating habits throughout the day.

Skipping Breakfast

There are plenty of reasons to skip breakfast. These may include:

  • There’s nothing healthy in the house to eat.
  • You’re too busy.
  • You’re too tired.
  • Sleeping longer sounds better.
  • You forgot.

Although it may seem fairly harmless to skip one meal—after all, it’s not like you’ll starve—it can become a bad habit that can have implications on every aspect of your life. That’s why quick and easy recipes, like the breakfast popsicle, are so useful. They offer you a quick, simple, and healthy way to eat breakfast even on the busiest of mornings. Skipping breakfast, for whatever reason, can lead to a number of problems throughout the day and over the long term. Studies have shown that:

    • People who skip breakfast are likely to snack more often throughout the day leading to weight gain.

  • Even if you don’t snack, you’ll probably unconsciously eat more at the remaining meals to try and make up for the missed calories. This can destroy your weight loss efforts.
  • If you skip breakfast, you’ll probably suffer from low energy levels throughout the morning.
  • By skipping breakfast, you may suffer from a foggy brain or memory problems.
  • People who eat breakfast are at lower risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels.
  • Skipping meals can worsen symptoms of diseases and disorders such as Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome (AFS).

What is AFS?

AFS is a disorder that is quickly becoming more common in the Western world, most likely due to our modern lifestyle. Today, stress is a big part of most people’s daily life. Although our bodies have a system for coping with stress, the NeuroEndoMetabolic (NEM) stress response system, it was not designed to work for prolonged periods of time. The NEM stress response activates a number of systems and structures in the body that help deal with short periods of high stress—such as running from a threat—but it wasn’t made to cope with the modern lifestyle, in which stress can be ongoing and seemingly endless.

When you’re under stress for a long period of time, your adrenal glands can become fatigued. The adrenal glands are an important part of the NEM stress response because they secrete certain hormones that keep you awake and active. However, if they become fatigued, you become less able to cope with the stress of your life and may suffer from a combination of baffling symptoms. The symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue include:

  • Weight gain
  • Lethargy
  • Brain fog
  • Intestinal problems
  • Anxiety
  • An increased susceptibility to infection

Treating AFS

Reducing stress, getting plenty of rest, and doing everything necessary to reduce the load on your adrenal glands are all ways of improving Adrenal Fatigue. A huge part of this is making sure you’re eating a healthy diet so your body has all the vitamins and minerals it needs to function at its best and to heal any damage that’s been done to your system. This means eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains.

Eating regularly is particularly important when you’re suffering from AFS and may help stabilize your blood sugar levels thus avoiding the highs and lows in energy that many report. A breakfast popsicle can be the ideal early morning food for this since it’s a quick and tasty way to break the fasting period and can give you a jolt of energy. However, if you have serious problems with your blood sugar levels, be sure to talk to your doctor before adding this breakfast food to your diet. A breakfast popsicle has a lot of natural sugar that may have implications on your blood sugar levels.

Adrenal Fatigue and the Breakfast Popsicle

Fatigue is a symptom strongly associated with Adrenal Fatigue. Those suffering from this disorder often complain of a lack of energy in the mornings or mid-afternoon as well as general feelings of brain fog and lethargy. This type of tiredness may seem like an expected side effect of a busy life, but it goes far beyond that when you have AFS. If you feel lethargic and it just won’t go away no matter what you do, it may be worth talking to your doctor about this disorder. Treatment for this problem includes rest and a healthy diet. A breakfast popsicle is the perfect snack for those mornings when you’re feeling tired, or even those afternoons when you don’t have the energy to get anything done. It contains lots of natural sugars, which will give you an energy boost, as well as vitamins and minerals that improve your overall health and wellbeing—and this can only improve your daily functioning.

Weight Loss and AFS

AFS and a breakfast popsicleOne of the most frustrating symptoms of AFS is unexplained weight gain. People who have this disorder often find that they gain weight around their middle section and have trouble losing it again. If you have this problem, a breakfast popsicle can be a good way of helping you achieve this goal. It’s a quick and easy breakfast that will give you energy and fill you up so you aren’t tempted to snack during the day or eat too much at meal times. Plus, the healthy fruits that are included will reduce your cravings and give you an energy boost, thus making you more likely to follow your intended healthy eating plan for the rest of the day.

However, it’s important that you don’t eat a breakfast popsicle too often. Although the sugars it contains are natural and good for you, they may cause weight gain if eaten in excess. This breakfast option should be used in strict moderation to avoid causing more problems than it actually solves.

How to Make a Breakfast Popsicle

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh organic fruit (berries work well)
  • 1/2 cup natural yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon psyllium husk
  • 1/2 banana (optional)
  • 0.125 tsp Liponano C
  • 1 teaspoon organic honey (optional)
  • Spinach, to taste (optional)
  • Protein powder (optional)

Method

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth. If the mixture is too thick, try adding some water until it becomes thin enough to drink easily.
  2. Pour the smoothie into popsicle molds.
  3. Freeze until set, then eat.
  4. Make sure you drink at least 2 glasses of water at the same time as you eat the mixture so the psyllium can expand properly.

Final Thoughts

breakfast popsicle mealBreakfast is an incredibly important meal, however, a lot of people either skip it entirely or find themselves eating unhealthy options because they’re in too much of a rush to make something better. This can lead to feeling tired and drained throughout the morning, and may even impact illnesses such as AFS—worsening feelings of lethargy associated with this disorder. To help you avoid this, make a few breakfast popsicles ahead of time and store them in your freezer. Then, on those mornings when you don’t have the time or energy to make anything else, just grab one.
