Exploring the Uses of Sound Frequency Healing

Have you ever noticed how listening to certain types of music calms you or makes you happy? This is because music may have a profound influence on brain waves, thereby influencing mood. And music could also heal you. Many healers make use of music as a form of healing the body. This healing through music is known as sound frequency healing. Sound frequency healing acts on the premise that certain sound frequencies have specific healing qualities.

The History of Sound Frequency Healing

An image of a woman holding a metal bowlPeople have been using sound in healing practices for centuries. Buddhist monks, for example, chant "om mani padme hum," not only to help their focus when meditating, but for healing as well. Furthermore, the use of the Tibetan singing bowl, sometimes used during yoga, helps calm the mind. Certain tones played on the Aboriginal didgeridoo have also long been used for healing. Even the ancient Egyptians used sound for healing.

Across the globe, people have for centuries equated different tonal sounds to healing different areas of the body. These sounds are often felt throughout the body. Think of what your body feels like when standing next to a speaker blaring music. It's possible to feel the vibrations in your body, although they may sometimes be too subtle to notice.

Yet frequency is not only related to sound. You and everything around you vibrates at a certain frequency. This is partly why crystals that vibrate at a certain frequency can help rectify radio signals. And it could help explain why certain people make you uneasy for no apparent reason - you are responding to their frequency.

Explaining Sound Frequency Healing

Sound frequency healing makes use of certain tones. For example, one popular healing tone is known as the composer Verdi’s A, at 432Hz. This is claimed to be the tone at which both our mind and body work in perfect balance.

But the number 432 is not only important in music. The ancients made use of this number when building the Great Pyramid at Giza. For example, according to some sources, when the dimensions of the pyramid are multiplied by 43,200, the resulting numbers may reflect the radius of the Earth and the procession of the Earth's axis.

Guido D’Arezzo, a Benedictine monk, was also obsessed with frequencies. His Solfeggio Scale, introduced during the 11th century AD, also made use of mathematics to produce purer sound. But many believe these frequencies were used as far back as ancient times, with the monk only making them more widely known. Many holistic healers making use of sound frequency healing use these days in their health practices.

Man’s fascination with sound healing frequencies has rolled over into modern times. Besides playing sounds at different frequencies, many holistic health practitioners make use of instruments when using sound healing in therapy sessions. Common instruments used during these sessions include drums, rain sticks, pan flutes, singing bowls, and wind chimes.

Sound Frequency Healing and Their Benefits

Most, but not all, of the sound healing frequencies used in the healing process are those recommended by the Solfeggio Scale of Guido D’Arezzo. Practitioners of alternative medicine claim these sound healing frequencies may help heal both mind and body.

40Hz

While not a Solfeggio frequency, this frequency has been linked to gamma brain waves and may help improve memory. Used in studying Alzheimer’s, this frequency may stimulate neural responses, reduce beta-amyloid plaques, and thus help fight the debilitating symptoms associated with dementia. It can also be used as light therapy.

174Hz

A Solfeggio frequency, 174Hz may help reduce stress and reduce your perception of pain, both physical and emotional.

285Hz

The 285Hz sound frequency, another Solfeggio frequency, may support your body’s cellular regeneration abilities. In so doing, it may help with healing in instances of injuries like burns or wounds. It may also increase energy and feelings of safety.

396Hz

A Solfeggio frequency, 396Hz may help your brain in processing negative feelings such as fear or guilt. Essentially, it is a sound frequency that helps transform negative feelings into positive ones.

417Hz

This frequency, also from the Solfeggio group, may help remove any negative energy surrounding trauma or emotional blockages. It can help you move forward with your life.

432Hz

This frequency is the one considered the best frequency for opera singers to tune into. This frequency may help promote emotional as well as mental wellbeing. It is considered to resonate with the frequency of the Earth.

440Hz

An image of a woman laying down with a tuning fork next to herThe 440Hz frequency is the standard tuning frequency for the musical note A. There is some controversy about its use in contrast to 432Hz, and some claim it is actually a negative frequency used for brainwashing in WWII. Other studies have found that it is not as effective at lowering heart rate as 432Hz, but it has still been considered a healing frequency by some that aids thought processes.

528Hz

The 528Hz Solfeggio frequency, also referred to as the love note or miracle note, has traditionally been used by indigenous people during ceremonies having to do with blessings. It has also been associated with DNA repair, miracles, and healing.

639Hz

This Solfeggio sound frequency, associated with communication, may help promote feelings of positivity, connection, and improve relationships.

741Hz

Another Solfeggio frequency, 741Hz is connected with improving your ability to express yourself and find solutions to problems.

852Hz

The 852Hz Solfeggio sound healing frequency may help address negative thought patterns associated with depression or anxiety. It is also associated with developing a more spiritual perspective.

963Hz

As it activates your pineal gland, the 963Hz Solfeggio frequency is associated with spiritual development. The sound frequency is also referred to as the pure miracle note.

What Health Conditions Can Sound Frequency Healing Help?

While many in traditional healthcare stand skeptical of the healing power of sound, much literature exists that strongly suggests that it may help with the healing process.

For example, this therapy, when used in stroke patients, may speed up their recovery time. It may also help ease anxiety in stressful settings like hospitals.

Used together with acupuncture and light therapy, it may increase your acupuncture treatment’s efficacy as opposed to when using acupuncture alone.

On an interesting note, certain frequencies may actively kill off cancer cells. Furthermore, sound frequency therapy may alter brain states and help deal with a variety of issues that include headaches and chronic pain. Many autistic children have also shown positive reactions when exposed to this type of therapy.

Sound healing therapy may also promote better brain function in those with dementia symptoms, reduce your perception of pain, and alter your stress hormone production to help your body deal with the ravages of stress.

In general, they can be used to help benefit many conditions with very few side effects.

Sound Frequency Healing and Stress

Many health issues are caused by chronic stress. The body has an inbuilt mechanism to deal with stress: the NeuroEndoMetabolic (NEM) stress response. It springs into action the moment you perceive stress. This results in an orchestra of actions and reactions throughout your body that includes all organ systems and processes. Your NEM stress response should return to normal once the stressor dissipates. But with chronic stress, this isn't always the case, and it can cause chronic problems.

An image of a woman holding a metal bowl with someone holding a bell above herCertain sound frequencies may help switch on the part of your nervous system that deals with resting and repair. This system is part of the Neuroaffect circuit of the NEM. It consists of the brain, autonomic nervous system, and microbiome.

Your autonomic nervous system consists of two parts: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. Your sympathetic nervous system, as part of your NEM stress response, is responsible for your fight or flight response when presented with stress. The parasympathetic nervous system is involved in metabolism and resting.

Sound vibrations transmit along nerves to various parts of your brain. You can perceive these vibrations as sound. But different sounds cause different reactions in your brain, depending on their frequency. Sound frequency healing may make use of certain frequencies that act on the middle ear, which sends these frequencies to various parts of the brain. These frequencies may affect your pituitary gland, hypothalamus, and thus your NEM stress response in such a way that neurotransmitters throughout the body.

Using sound frequency healing could thus help put your body back into a state of balance, as it may promote proper regulation of your brain, neurotransmitters, and stress response.

How to Use Sound Frequency Healing At Home

Your body functions best at sound frequencies between 62Hz and 72Hz. The lower your body’s frequency, the higher your risk of developing health issues. When under 42Hz, for example, you stand a higher risk of developing cancer.

While seeing a holistic healthcare practitioner is the safest way to use the healing power of sound, you can expose yourself to certain beneficial frequencies at home. These frequencies are often found on the internet. But do be careful if you decide on this option.

The Danger of Certain Sound Frequencies

Higher sound frequencies tend to positively stimulate your body. Lower frequencies, on the other hand, could affect you negatively. Some of the negative effects associated with low frequencies include, amongst others:

  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Concentration issues
  • Nausea
  • Insomnia

If you find your healing frequencies on the internet, try to make sure they are actually the frequencies they claim to be. Avoid using poor-quality speakers or headphones to listen.

Sound frequency healing may benefit both your mental and physical wellbeing, especially when used in conjunction with other therapies.
