A Guide to Effective Natural Vertigo Remedies

An image of a woman sitting and holding her headDo you experience vertigo for no apparent reason? It’s one thing to get vertigo if you go on an amusement park ride or spin around in circles. But it’s entirely another thing to experience it at random, disrupting your daily activities and maybe even putting you in danger. This isn’t the type of condition that you can just ignore. Instead, you need to identify the underlying issues that are causing it. This will allow you and your doctor to work out the best vertigo remedies that will work for you.

What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is a type of dizziness. It makes you feel as if you’re spinning or as if the world is spinning around you. It’s similar to motion sickness and light-headedness, but it isn’t exactly the same thing.

Vertigo is a symptom, not a disease. That’s why you need to visit your doctor if you experience it. They will be able to work with you to determine what’s causing it and what type of vertigo you have. This is the only way to identify an effective vertigo remedy.

Some symptoms of vertigo include:

Identifying Vertigo

Because vertigo can have so many different causes, accurately identifying it can be difficult and take some time, but this is critical to choosing the right vertigo remedies. To help with that process, it’s important that you track your symptoms beforehand to ensure that you give your doctor as much information as possible. You should make sure that you tell your doctor about:

  • Your vertigo symptoms, what they feel like and when they manifest
  • Any medications, vitamins, or supplements you’re taking
  • Major causes of recent stress
  • Other health conditions you have

In order to make an accurate diagnosis, your doctor may need to perform several tests. These can include:

  • A clinical exam
  • A head impulse test
  • Hearing exam
  • Balance Test
  • Imaging
  • The Dix-Hallpike maneuver, where you’re quickly lowered from a seated position to lying down

Vertigo Remedies

For both central and peripheral vertigo, finding and correcting the underlying cause is the best way to eliminate this symptom. Vertigo can even go away on its own over time, it just depends on what’s causing it.

But if your vertigo is lingering, then here are some vertigo remedies that your doctor can suggest to help you eliminate or manage your symptoms:

    • Red light photobiomodulation therapy for tinnitus and vertigo.
    • Medication, supplements, and stress reduction strategies for migraines.
    • Nausea and dizziness medications for ongoing conditions.
    • Anti-inflammatories for Meniere's disease, vestibular neuronitis, or labyrinthitis.
    • Epley maneuver exercises to shift the crystals for BPPV.
    • Lifestyle changes for Meniere’s disease.
    • Surgery for perilymph fistula or SSCDS.
    • Balance therapy, which can make your balance system less sensitive to motion and is usually used for people with inner ear conditions like vestibular neuritis.

  • Psychotherapy for vertigo that’s caused by anxiety disorders.
  • Injections that disable the balance function in your damaged ear with an injection of the antibiotic gentamicin, allowing the unaffected ear to take over the balance function.
  • A labyrinthectomy, which is a rare surgery used as a last resort in which the inner ear sense organ is removed, allowing the other ear to take over the balance function.

Addressing Vertigo at Home

If you can’t get to your doctor immediately or if your symptoms are more chronic, there are things you can do that will help you manage the symptoms. Try some of these lifestyle changes and see if they help:

  • Avoid moving suddenly.
  • Get a new pillow in case your old one is pinching the nerves in your neck and causing your symptoms.
  • Walk with a cane for stability.
  • Assess your home for trip hazards and remove them.
  • Ensure that your home has good lighting.
  • Sit down immediately when you feel dizzy.
  • Refrain from driving a car or operating heavy machinery.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Get a massage to reduce stress and improve blood flow.
  • Adopt stress management strategies, as stress can make vertigo worse.
  • Talk to your doctor about stopping any medications that may cause dizziness.
  • Make sure you’re sleeping enough.
  • Avoid caffeine, salt, alcohol, and tobacco as they can worsen this symptom.
  • Try acupressure for stress relief.
  • Try an over-the-counter medication for any nausea that you experience.

Dietary Changes

There are also several dietary changes that you can make that may help correct your vertigo symptoms. Try:

  • Eating a high fiber diet that lowers your blood pressure and blood cholesterol, as these issues are common causes of vertigo.
  • Eating low glycemic foods to prevent vertigo brought on by blood sugar instabilities.
  • Increasing your intake of vitamin D by getting more sun and eating foods like shrimp, cod, mushrooms, eggs, tuna fish, and wild-caught fish.
  • Increasing your magnesium intake with kale, tofu, collard greens, ginger, buckwheat, and quinoa.

You could also try decreasing your intake of foods that can bring on vertigo symptoms. Try eliminating them from your diet for a few days and then adding them back in slowly. If your symptoms return, then you've found the culprit.

Some foods that are associated with vertigo are:

  • Sugary foods, which can upset the fluid balance in your body.
  • Salty foods, which disrupt fluid regulation and balance.
  • Alcohol and caffeine, both of which can lead to dehydration.
  • Foods that trigger migraines like those rich in tyramine such as salami, bananas, aged cheeses, chocolate smoked sausage, pepperoni, nuts and seeds, and liverwurst.

Herbal Remedies

People have been using herbs for years to try and correct vertigo symptoms. However, it's also a good idea to be careful when adding these remedies to your daily routine, as they can be quite potent, so always talk to your doctor first. Some common herbal remedies are:

  • Ginkgo biloba, which improves circulation in the brain and inner ear and has been shown to be as effective as some medications in studies.

  • Ginger, which improves blood supply in the brain and middle ear and may help with nausea and dizziness as well as vertigo.
  • Butcher's broom, which is a natural vasodilator and improves inner ear circulation.
  • Cayenne, which improves blood flow to the inner ear and brain by decreasing platelet clumping.

Vertigo and Adrenal Fatigue

When under stress, the human body has a built-in apparatus that allows it to handle stress. This is called the NeuroEndoMetabolic (NEM) stress response, and it’s made up of six circuits, each of which contains three interrelated organs and systems.

When you’re healthy, stress causes the activation of the NEM stress response, prompting the release of cortisol from the adrenal glands. Cortisol causes the circuits to change how they function. These changes help you cope with stress and protect you from any damage that stress can cause.

Unfortunately, the NEM stress response is only meant to be active for short periods. When you're chronically stressed, it has to be active all the time and can start to become dysfunctional. This can lead over time to a condition known as Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome (AFS).

When you have AFS, the adrenal glands can become fatigued from the high workload of producing all the cortisol that your body needs. And the NEM stress response and its circuits can become unbalanced from remaining in a stressed state all the time. This can result in widespread malfunctions, symptoms, and serious health conditions.

Vertigo is a common complaint from people with AFS. This is often due to underlying dysfunctions in the body’s circuits as well as their related organs and systems.

The Link Between AFS and Vertigo

When you have AFS and the circuits in your body become unbalanced, it can result in a range of symptoms including vertigo. This can happen because of several problems that occur with AFS including:

Infection

When you have AFS, the Inflammation Circuit in your body becomes dysfunctional. This causes the immune system to malfunction and creates chronic inflammation. In many people, this results in ongoing or reoccurring infections.

One common cause of vertigo is infections, particularly in the vestibular nerve, one of the most important nerves in the head. If you have AFS, then you’re more likely to experience this kind of infection. And because of Inflammation Circuit imbalances, your body may become unable to rid itself of the infection, meaning that any symptoms of infection may last longer than usual.

Neuroaffect Circuit Imbalances

Malfunctions in the Neuroaffect Circuit may also bring on AFS. The Neuroaffect Circuit contains the brain, and the health of this part of your body can degrade quickly when you have AFS. This can bring on Neurotransmitter (NT) imbalances, migraines, and other issues with your brain as well as a range of troubling symptoms, including vertigo.

Bioenergetics Circuit Imbalances

An image of the liver and lungsThe Bioenergetics Circuit includes the pancreas, the liver, and the thyroid. This is the circuit that’s responsible for metabolism, that is providing energy to every cell in the body. This is perhaps the least understood circuit in terms of how it’s affected by AFS, but it can play a pivotal role in causing vertigo.

As the Bioenergetics Circuit becomes dysfunctional in AFS, metabolic disorders such as problems with carbohydrate metabolism, unstable blood sugar levels, and diabetes can occur. And recent research has linked problems with carbohydrate metabolism with metabolic inner ear disorder, which is characterized by hearing problems such as tinnitus and hearing loss, as well as vertigo.

Unfortunately, the exact mechanics of the link between inner ear problems and blood sugar problems are not fully understood. However, several studies have revealed that altered carbohydrate metabolism is strongly associated with vertigo as well as other conditions that can bring on vertigo such as migraines, Ménière’s disease, and vestibular disorders.

The inner ear is a very complex and delicate system. And whatever the link between the inner ear and your metabolism, it seems probable that inner ear problems can be early warning signs of other metabolic disorders, such as those brought about by AFS and Bioenergetics Circuit malfunctions.

Managing AFS and Vertigo

If you experience vertigo as a result of AFS and circuit imbalances, it may be very difficult for you to find an effective vertigo care plan. You need to work on addressing the underlying circuit imbalances and adrenal fatigue first in order to get rid of this symptom. Unfortunately, this can be very difficult.

AFS isn’t commonly accepted by the medical establishment. This is why many people with this condition go from doctor to doctor, looking for help they often can’t get. If you visit a doctor who isn’t aware of AFS, they may give you medications to correct your vertigo without addressing the underlying cause. This will only cause additional stress, which can worsen AFS, and may result in your symptom lingering or coming back.

That’s why it’s essential that you look for a doctor who’s aware of AFS. They will be able to look past the surface symptoms and pinpoint the underlying issue that’s causing it. And that’s the best way to rid yourself of the annoying symptom of vertigo.

The Takeaway

Vertigo can be quite a complex problem and one that indicates underlying health conditions. That’s why it’s important that you talk with your doctor and properly identify the underlying cause, so you can effectively manage the vertigo. Here are some steps to ensure that you get the help you need:

  1. Try some strategies that will help you cope with the vertigo until you can get professional help such as walking with a cane, clearing your home of hazards, and improving your sleeping and eating patterns.
  2. Keep track of your vertigo and any other symptoms.
  3. Get a second opinion if your doctor can’t seem to identify the cause or solutions.
